What is DocuSync™?
DocuSync™ is a highly secure and easy-to-use system for storing files directly online. This creates an automatic backup that allows you to access these files from any location via the Internet, making it ideal for those who need to access data from multiple physical locations or workstations, and who need a quick, easy method of creating backup files. It's faster than creating tape storage, but is just as easy to use.

Yes, DocuSuncT Desktop Manager, DocuSync™ Web Explorer and DocuSync™ DavDrive are designed to run under OSX, Linux and MS Windows operating systems.
-
How does the synchronize (sync) feature work?
DocuSync™ will allow you to quickly and easily synchronize the contents of folders on your computer with those on the DocuSync™ server.
Here's how it works. When you create a "sync pair" between a folder on your PC, and with a designated folder on DocuSync™, once you synchronize the first time, updating it becomes fast and easy. Your folders will be synchronized in real time.
At the end of the day (or whenever you choose), simply click on the Synchronize Now button. Your folder on the DocuSync™ server will be automatically updated with any changes since the last synchronization.
At home, you can log on with your PC, click on Synchronize Now again, and update the files on your home computer via DocuSync™. Your work and home folders can be updated and synchronized in just minutes. This makes it a perfect application for professionals who work via different computers, or who need to access and update their laptop files while traveling to different locations.

How to synchronize files?
(The example below is synching between a work PC and a home PC)
Link a folder in your work PC's local directory with a folder within the DocuSync™ server directory. To do this, you can create a folder called "My Sync folder", or any other preferred name. You will want to make a copy that you can place on your home PC as well, if you want to synch with it.
Create a Synch folder on the DocuSync™ server. This must have the same name (for instance, "My Sync folder" on the DocuSync™ side) and contain exactly the same data as the folder on your PC.
You will then create a Synch Pair between the folder on your work PC, and the folder on DocuSync™. Both folders will be clearly marked within the view window.
You can then create another synch pair between the folder on DocuSync™, and the folder you copied (and then placed) on your home PC, by following the above steps once again.
You can create new synch pairs at any time, as well as view them, modify them, or delete them through the Synchronization menu.
You can synchronize folders manually, or schedule synchronization to occur at a predetermined time (an icon on your system tray will note when synchronization is scheduled). During synchronization, a synchronization status window will appear, letting you know how much time remains until synchronization is completed.
Synchronizing folders will cause the following to occur:
The folder with new information will be synchronized to the folder to be updated -with changes that ensure that the data inside both is exactly the same when synchronization is completed.
During synchronization, the following will occur:
DocuSync™ will first scan the file content for changes.
DocuSync™ will identify files which need to be uploaded to update the server version, and begin uploading them (note: if synchronizing from the DocuSync™ server, then the opposite occurs: DocuSync™ will identify files to be downloaded to your PC to update the file).
If files need to be deleted to update a folder during synchronization, then this will also occur.
At the end of synchronization, both folders and their files will contain exactly the same information.

How do I create backup files?
DocuSync™ has a backup features that allows you to create backups of critical files on its online server. You can backup files either manually or automatically, using the easy interface on your DocuSync™ Desktop Manager.
To backup files, first click on the My Backups icon. When it opens, it will appear much as the My Storage menu does: within it, there will be 2 file overview controls that let you view and browse files: the left panel will display the files on your PC's hard drive (local files), and the right will display the server's backup folder.
Inside the server's backup folder are your backup files. These are named by date and time, such as "07-15-04 5:24PM". Each time you run the Backup option within DocuSync™, the backup process server creates a new file with the current date and time (very similar to Windows creating "restore points" for your hard drive files).
You can schedule automatic backup times for critical files
By clicking on the Create a backup set button, then clicking on Backup set properties, a wizard will be displayed. You can select any folders on your PC's local drive, give the backup set a name, and then click on the next button.
A Set up backup schedule button will then be displayed, which lets you choose automatic creation of backup files on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis at a certain time.
- You must have DocuSync™ open and running at the selected time, for automatic backup creation to occur.
- If you've used to some specific backup application you may continue to use it with DocuSync™ DavDrive as a regular disk drive.
-
Can I share my files or folders with others using DocuSync™?
Yes, you can share files and folders online by creating a link that others can click on to view stored files and folders. A typical link would look like this: www.docusync.com/Share.aspx?ShareID=(your share id number).
Such link you may use to access from DocuSync™ Web Explorer, to link the shared folder within DocuSuncT Desktop Manager, to map it as web folder or network drive using DAVDrive, and even to access your friend's share from your mobile device.
Simply log on, create the link, then send it to those you want to share files with.
-
I have sensitive files that I store. How secure is DocuSync™?
DocuSync™ is highly secure, and uses industry-standard encryption (128-bit encryption) to protect confidential or sensitive data when in Secure mode.
When uploading files, you can choose one of 2 different modes, with different levels of security:
Fast mode: this allows rapid transfer of files, but is less secure. This transfers files as simple HTTP files (port 80).
Secure mode: this allows the highly secure transfer of 128-bit encryption files via HTTP-S (port 443), using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology. Your files when enjoy the same security level used by large merchant sites and healthcare firms online. Please be aware that transferring files in secure mode will take longer, due to the encryption process.
-
Why are my downloads/uploads so slow?
Uploading and downloading performance with DocuSync™ will depend in large part on the speed of your connection to the Internet when uploading and downloading files. It is quite common for download speeds to be quite slower than upload speeds. For instance DSL, some cable systems, and most satellite services often have faster download times than upload times - and this could be experienced when uploading and downloading files within DocuSync™.
You can perform a quick check of your actual download / upload speed at http://www.dslreports.com/stest

What are those version conflicts I get during synchronization?
To maintain the consistency of your files during sync we track the following parameters of your files:
- File modification date and time;
- File CRC (cyclic redundancy checksum) to verify if the file contents were changed despite of the preserved date;
- Remote file version number to keep the history of synchronizations between multiple computers;
The version conflict may occur if, for example, you have two computers synchronized through the DocuSync™ storage, you may get one file synchronized with remote storage, edit it, then sync the file from other computer, edit it and sync it back with remote, then you will have the file newer then it was originally when synchronized from the first computer, so when you decide to sync it back from the first computer after you edit it, it may have remote date newer, version newer and of course, CRC will be different. This is version conflict.
So, will have to decide what policy to choose when it occurs:
Decide every time interactively, let the remote file being copied overwriting the local file, and to overwrite the remote copy with the local file.
